Just Take Part

by Rachel Fox

This piece was made for the community art project Fun A Day Dundee* (FADD) in 2020. FADD has been running since 2011 and anyone can take part. It involves doing something creative every day in January, sharing your work online (if you want) and taking part in an exhibition later on in the year. Dundee’s is not the only Fun A Day project – the first one was in Philadelphia, USA and there are quite a few others.

For my 2020 FADD project I wrote a 31-word poem and illustrated a word every day. All the illustrations have musical/song links to their word as I am a big music fan and was a DJ and worked in a record shop in Leeds in the 1990s. I am much more experienced as a writer than as a visual artist so the illustrating was quite a challenge, but I got more ambitious as I went along. At the end of January 2020 I got the images printed out in 7-inch single size (slightly bigger than my original drawings). I planned to display them like records on the wall in a record shop at the FADD in-person exhibition, but that event ended up being online.

In this current exhibition you can see the 31 pieces here displayed in a 7-inch single record box. There’s a list of the song references at the back of the box.

Please flick through the record box if you like, as you like.

*The organisation Fun A Day Dundee is having a year off in January 2023 but will be back in January 2024.
