Sciennes Gallery

Over the last ten years, artworks by over 1000 people who have experienced mental health issues have been shown at Out of Sight Out of Mind exhibition and it has had nearly 10,000 visitors. The first one took place in 2013 and each has been at Summerhall during October. It was, and still is, organised by individuals with experience of mental health issues and several organisations.

This room has been curated by the 2022 OOSOOM Planning Group to share its story and ethos. It presents material from the past ten exhibitions and a specially commissioned film.

It begins with a reflection on the relationship between art and mental health and the need for peoples’ voices to be heard, and the emergence of the ‘service user’ movement.
